Overall workshop objectives:
· Increase awareness of learning disabilities and effective teaching strategies for struggling learners.
· Enhance tutoring and adult learning through utilization of new adult literacy resources at Multnomah County Library.
· Find out about tutoring in a dynamic community-based ABE/GED program
Background:
At Londer Learning Center, many of our adult students have learning challenges (learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, memory issues) and, over the years we’ve had to develop successful strategies in helping our students learn. Also, enrollment in our ABE and GED program keeps increasing, so we have a need for skilled tutors who might want to work in our very unique, nationally recognized adult literacy program.
This workshop is co-sponsored by the adult literacy program at Multnomah County Library. Adult learners who need more learning time outside class, or who are unable to attend formal classes now have new learning pathways available at the library. The library’s Adult Literacy Coordinator will showcase these new resources, share tutor tips, and show how to optimize learning and teaching opportunities for adult literacy students.
Facilitators:
Melissa Madenski, Adult Literacy Coordinator for Multnomah County Library. She has taught in public and private schools, the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark and Oregon Coast Community College. Her students have ranged in age from 5 to 80. She has tutored both native English speakers and non-native speakers.
