Free ESOL Training Workshop - How Do I Know What They Need?

Saturday, January 22nd 2011 3-5pm

Rockwood Library Stark and 172nd

Sponsored by Mt Hood Community College VLT

One of the most perplexing problems for an ESOL teacher, especially in the community setting, is Needs Assessment. It's hard enough when the class is multilevel – one learner can barely form letters in his own language; and another learner is ready for a promotion at her housekeeping job, if she could only speak better English. And you know that the Somali speaker in your class is having a difficult situation, but you don't speak Somali. Add to that the different reasons people are in the US; and most challenging of all – you design a whole lesson about plumbing for the one guy who wants to get a job plumbing, and then he doesn't show up!

This workshop will explore needs assessment strategies that are dynamic, interactive, multilevel and can be easily modified to work with any kind of ESL class.

This is one of a monthly series of free workshops held by People-Places-Things, an organization that builds language and culture bridges in our communities. These electrifying and practical trainings are part of our commitment to improving the quality of ESOL in community-based settings, and are open to the public, but space is limited to 20 participants.
